2020 Enlist E3™ Soybean Trait Update

03/10/2020
  • Up until the recent approval of the Enlist E3™ trait, 2,4-D’s use on soybeans has been limited to preplant applications.
  • The Enlist E3™ trait confers soybeans tolerance for over the top applications of glyphosate, 2,4-D Choline and glufosinate, for control of problematic, tough-to-control weeds like waterhemp and marestail.
  • Managing weed height, following good application techniques, using the approved tank mix partners and the correct adjuvants are paramount to the success of this technology.

The spring of 2019 marked the full approval of the Enlist E3™ system, along with two new 2,4-D formulations; Enlist One™ and Enlist Duo®, for post emergent use on Enlist E3™ traited soybeans. This has been a much anticipated and needed tool throughout the Midwest to manage tough-to control, herbicide resistant weeds that invade corn and soybean fields. With this new technology, comes a set of stewardship guidelines necessary to achieve successful weed control and to preserve this tool for many years. EnlistTM product labels have a few additional guidelines regarding weed height, application techniques, and approved tank mix partners and adjuvants. Although Enlist E3™ soybeans were approved in 2019, they were only grown in a small number of acres due to a limited seed supply, so 2020, will be a full launch year.

Enlist E3™ traited soybeans are tolerant to glyphosate, 2,4-D choline and glufosinate (Liberty®) applied postemergence. 2,4-D choline is an improved lower volatility formulation compared to older formulations commonly used (i.e. 2,4-D Ester, 2,4-D amine). 2,4-D approved formulated products are Enlist One™ Herbicide with Colex D® Technology or Enlist Duo® Herbicide with Colex D® Technology. Enlist One™ contains 2,4-D choline only, while Enlist Duo® is a premix of 2,4-D choline plus glyphosate. To obtain optimum weed control on herbicide resistant species like waterhemp and marestail and reduce selection pressure on one herbicide site of action, glufosinate (Liberty®) can be tank mixed with Enlist One™. However, Liberty is not a labeled tank mix partner with Enlist Duo®.

Weed height: The labels of Enlist One™ and Enlist Duo® herbicides permit spraying weeds up to four inches in height. The smaller the weed, the easier it is to manage it.If weeds are taller than four inches, successful control may not be achieved and this may actually speed up the evolution of resistance to these new 2,4-D formulations.

Application techniques: One of the biggest goals of all pesticide applications is to apply the product to the target field and make sure the product doesn’t move off-target. In the case of herbicide applications, off-target movement may result in non-intentional injury to susceptible crops. When making an application of Enlist One™ or Enlist Duo®, we need to fully review and understand the label and the requirements that will limit the potential for off-target movement of spray particles. The herbicide labels for these two products list specific guidelines regarding buffers, nozzle selection, boom height, wind speed, and environmental conditions that must be observed at the time of application.By choosing a nozzle that limits driftable fines, keeping the boom low, following wind speed parameters and making applications when conditions limit temperature inversions, will help to minimize off-target movement and ultimately result in greater weed control.

Approved tank mixes and adjuvants: For a product to be approved as a tank mix partner of Enlist One™ or Enlist Duo®, the tank mix product cannot result in increased particle drift or negatively influence the application in any way. AMS is an approved tank-mix partner of Enlist One™ and Enlist Duo® and it is used to help condition water and mitigate herbicide tie-up due to hardwater cations. The FS System has a wide variety of approved adjuvants that complement these new products. FS MaxSupreme™ and FS AMS LDF™ are both AMS based water conditioners that have been tested and approved with Enlist herbicide formulations. FS MaxSupreme™ is a premix that contains AMS and a drift reduction aid, while FS AMS LDF™ is a premix that contains AMS and a defoaming agent. In addition to these new products, FS has a complete lineup of activator adjuvants that may increase the efficacy of common herbicides and may be tank mixed with these new 2,4-D herbicides. For information on which products can be tank mixed with Enlist One™ and Enlist Duo® herbicides please visit their respective websites (links below).

Before making any applications of Enlist One™ or Enlist Duo® herbicides, be sure to fully read and understand the herbicide label.By following the label and the stewardship guidelines, we help preserve this technology for many years to come. If you have any questions about the Enlist™ system contact your local FS Crop Specialist.
